Microbial Source-Tracking

IMG_8556.HEIC

Identification of point and non-point sources of pollution is an essential part of maintaining aquatic systems and allocating resources for pollution mitigation efforts. This is often a challenging endeavor because of complex land use dynamics, shifting physiochemical variables within a waterway, and various stakeholder concerns. We utilize molecular methods in the analysis of water samples to identify and quantify fecal sources by looking for host-specific bacteria. These data help to inform critical policy and land management decisions, ultimately leading to healthier waterways. Past and current locations for our MST work inlcude Onondoga Creek, the Finger Lakes Region, and Salt Lake County (UT, USA).
